My Divine Devotions: The heart of a servant

December 13, 2010

Luke 22:27 (NLT) Normally the master sits at the table and is served by his servants. But not here! For I am your servant.

Jesus Christ led by example. On the night before he would hang from a cross to fulfill God’s plan for redemption of mankind, Christ spent time with his disciples. He deeply cared for these souls who left everything behind to follow him. Instead of desiring to be served by them, he chose to honor them.

The other Gospels describe how Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. We honor God for everything he has done for us when we become the servants of our family, friends and those in need of God’s tender care. Approach everyone knowing that they need to know the compassion and great love that only Christ provides.

In serving others with our God-given gifts and abilities, we become sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s work through our lives. It’s in devoted, selfless servanthood that we begin to understand the extent of God’s love and his perfect plan for our existence.
