My Divine Devotions: Grace for the last
December 12, 2010
1 Peter 5:5 All of you, put on a spirit that is free of pride toward each other as if it were your clothes. Scripture says: “God opposes those who are proud. But he gives grace to those who are not."
Not only are we to be happy about the things that God does for others, which we secretly covet in our own hearts, it goes further -- into our relationships with each other. We must strip that last wall that prevents us from experiencing Christian love toward all. There can’t be an exception in the way we treat each other.
It matters how we treat others. Take great care before a word leaves your mouth and remember that each one of us was uniquely created and therefore valued by God. A demeaning remark made sarcastically or even in fun is not acceptable. We must guard the hearts of those around us as if they were made of fine glass that’s easily shattered.
As we walk in the power of last, God changes the vile thoughts and words that once freely flowed -- until one day we no longer desire to display our brilliance. Meanwhile, our brilliance increases as we become powerful by being last.
