When it hurts to care - Psalm 23:4

Psalm 23:4 Even when walking through the dark valley of death I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me, guarding, guiding all the way.

Life lived on the mountaintop is the most beautiful experience especially when you have a relationship with God. But leaving that mountaintop to live the everydayness of life and especially in the everydayness of the ministry that God has planned for us isn’t glamorous.

I spent years running from God because it hurt to care. I still want to do that even when I know that I am called to care for others through their valley experiences.

Today, for the first time ever, I cried after I left a hospital room. My heart was broken for a patient and the family. Thankfully, I had a chance to share my tears and benefit from the wise counsel of one of our priests. His advice: Cry. You talk to God and cry.

I shudder to imagine: What if I had not stepped into that room to care?  


To remind those who suffer that the Lord is on their journey.

Reflecting on the Papal election and my childhood

March 16, 2013 My First Communion Day with Tia Lupita  I was born into a deeply devout Catholic family  so it was natural for me to be moved by the selection of a new Pope.  We attended Spanish/Latin Mass at 7 a.m. every Sunday and I went to Catechism class each Wednesday (when I  didn't  play hooky with my best friend...sorry grandmother). J   I also celebrated my First Communion, Confirmation and  Quinceañera   with full blown Mexican-American family celebrations. My mother celebrating my Quinceanera with me. It was a big deal. Along the journey, most of the family left the church except my mom.  We found different congregations to fellowship and worship the Lord.  I dropped church and belief in God altogether for many years. Good Friday, April 22, 2011 2 Corinthians 4:1 We don't become discouraged, since God has given us this ministry through his mercy. It doesn’t matter how close you are to God, at some point you may feel discouraged and elect to take a break. Take a short break, pull yourself together and make sure you stay connected to God because you are needed for the purposes for which He made you. That has become quite clear in my journey. Real dependence on God begins when you lay your sins and burdens at the foot of the cross. Once you reveal your true heart to God, he opens doors that you can walk through even while storms are raging in your own world. He knows that you are not perfect, but he knows why you were created and where/when he needs you. God works through us to accomplish his purposes.
